Planners approve £6m youth zone in London









Planners have given the particular green light to proposals to build the £6m youth zone in Barnet.

The task, which is being developed by national charitable organisation OnSide alongside Barnet Council, will give you a wide range of activities for young people elderly between eight and 19 or more to 25 for those with extra needs.


Facilities will include dancing, sport, art, music, drama, mass media, employability and mentoring programmes. Developing work is due to begin later this season with an opening date planned with regard to late 2018.


Following the branding process last year, young people within Barnet have named the youngsters zone ‘Unitas', reflecting the information on the borough's coat of hands, which means ‘Unity'.


Barnet youngsters zone chair Keith Black stated: "Gaining planning permission for Unitas really is thrilling news for every single young individual in Barnet.


"We can not wait to start building this amazing facility which will change lives by giving young people with somewhere safe plus inspiring to spend their leisure time plus giving them a great number of wonderful activities to engage in.


"So much hard work went into getting us to this point and am want to thank everybody who has assisted make this dream a reality. "

Reuben Thompstone, chair of Barnet Council's kids, education, libraries and safeguarding panel, said: "I'm delighted that we have arrived at this key milestone in this thrilling project, and I am really looking towards seeing the Youth Zone using shape.


"This is going to be an incredible asset for young people in Barnet with all kinds of opportunities on offer. It is often great to see so many young people associated with helping from the outset in making Unitas their own. "

OnSide wants to establish 100 youth zones within the "next generation".
