Self Defense can come in a number of ways. Many folks take up a martial-art in hopes of learning to defend on their own while others opt for a " self defense class". But are martial arts self-defense focused and are self-defense classes worth your time and energy.

Many dojos across the world are usually directed towards the sporting aspects: competitions, kata demonstrations, board breaking plus extreme performances that are primarily centered on looking good and doing some pretty fitness center gymnastic feats. Every technique has a counter method; Every counter technique has a kitchen counter, ad nauseum, ad infinitum. These types of claims can get you into real difficulty if you try to use the techniques trained and you run up against someone that understands the counters. Street fighters understand the counters to a lot of martial arts techniques and so they practice them.

Better to wonder exactly what might have happened than to experience this first hand.

I tell the students that all training is good even though it teaches you what not to perform. So if you are planning to take self-defense with all the idea that it may save your life make sure you look at the training with a critical eyes.
