Maine Turkey Season Starts Monday Throughout The State – Outdoor News Daily



AUGUSTA, Maine � Spring turkey season starts upon Monday, May 1 throughout the condition, and youth hunters have their personal day this Saturday, April 29. IFW biologists believe that hunters are usually in for a successful season.

Maine is rapidly becoming known as a destination for turkey sportsman, as hunters from 44 says and six different Canadian provinces hunted turkeys in Maine this past year. The majority of out of state hunters originated from Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut plus Pennsylvania.


Last year’s dried out spring provided nearly ideal having their nests conditions, which meant higher hatching and survival rates for poults according to Sullivan. That should translate into sportsman seeing multiple birds. Last year, more than 16, 000 hunters pursued turkeys in Maine.


“It furthermore seems that the timing of the period is nearly ideal. We are hearing plenty of gobbling activities, and seeing lots of males strutting, � said Sullivan, who added that he thought turkeys would be very responsive to calling.


Wild turkeys are a wildlife achievement story in Maine. Once long gone completely from Maine landscapes, these are now a familiar sight in every Maine’s 16 counties, thanks to the reintroduction and management plan were only available in the 1970s by the Department associated with Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

With a valid Maine big game or small sport hunting license, turkey hunters can buy a wild turkey permit just for $20 for both residents plus nonresidents. This permit allows chicken hunters to take up to two bewhiskered wild turkeys in the spring, plus an additional two turkeys in the drop. The spring season runs through May 1 until June 3 or more.
